Netflix making a series out of Giolito's novel has helped shed further light on the shooting crisis in America. On the contrary, in 2018 the United States has had 24 shootings occur in an educational setting where at least one person had been injured or killed. In Europe's recent history, school shootings have been extremely out of the ordinary and unheard of. The school tragedy is all the more shocking because it occurred in the wealthy community of Djursholm, an upper-class area located in Stockholm, Sweden. Sebastian is the son of the richest men in Sweden, and his relationship with Maja appears as if it could be straight from the Upper East Side in "Gossip Girl." The show intertwines a backstory and plenty of drama with the main event that "Quicksand" is centered around. Maja Norberg, an 18-year-old girl, is accused of orchestrating a shooting at her school, alongside boyfriend Sebastian Fagerman. Quicksand is based on "Störst av allt ," a Swedish novel written by Malin Persson Giolito.

Netflix's new Swedish drama, "Quicksand," seems to have been pulled straight from a news headline the exact script may not have been taken from a reporter, but the plot is one that could fit hundreds of news stories written about American events in the past decade.
